Grafton Garden Club Looks Ahead

The Grafton Garden Club kicks off the 2009-2010 year with an appearance at the Farmers Market on Thursday, September 3, 2009 from 2pm to 6pm. Come and meet some members of the Club and learn about the Club and the upcoming programs, workshops, and trips. Ask questions. On Tuesday, September 8, 2009, the Grafton Garden Club and the Grafton Land Trust are co-presenting the "Collecting and Identifying Mushrooms" slide show with George Davis, past president and current Identification Committee Chair of the Boston Mycological Club. Learn how to recognize the good, the bad, and the ugly in the mushroom world. This will help you for the Mushroom Foray in Sunday, September 13, 2009. But before the Foray. the Grafton Garden Club is planning a carpooling trip to Whitehorne House and Rough Point in Newport on Saturday, September 12, 2009. the Whitehorne House features some of the best examples of Newport furniture, including the Doris Duke collection, from the 18th century. One of the highlights of Whitehorne House is its beautiful garden. Rough Point is the magnificent oceanfront estate of philanthropist Doris Duke and is still decorated as she left it. Rough Point provides a sweeping ocean view and expansive grounds designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. On Sunday, September 13, 2009 starting at 2pm, The Grafton Garden Club and the Grafton Land Trust present the "Mushroom Foray" into Gummere Woods. Children of all ages are welcome,; please come dressed for the woods, including good walking shoes, DEET, and sunscreen. Bring a shallow, wide basket to hold the mushrooms. Following the Foray, all the mushrooms will be spread on a table and identified by Mr. Davis. On Tuesday, October 13, 2009 starting at 7pm, Cynthia Dias-Reid will present a slide show on "Planning, Planting, and Maintaining a Period-Appropriate Garden". On Tuesday, November 10, 2009, Janice Smith, second place winner of the 2009 Grafton Gardens Tour, will present a slide show on how Christmas is celebrated in Williamsburg. This is for Grafton Garden Club members only. On Tuesday, December 1, 2009, the Grafton Garden Club will once again decorate the Willard House and Clock Museum, but this year, the Club will bring an "updated" look to the House in time for "Grafton Celebrates the Holidays" and the Club's Victorian Tea. On Tuesday, December 1, starting at 7pm, Janice Smith returns to lead a workshop where you can create a Williamsburg Fruit Arrangement with fresh fruit and fruit purchased directly from Williamsburg. Space is limited, and available to Grafton Garden Club members first. Any spaces available after November 1 will be available to the public. On Sunday, December 6, 2009, the Grafton Garden Club is again planning on participating in "Grafton Celebrates the Holidays" by having a Williamsburg Christmas Centerpiece Display and Sale at the Harvest barn as well as the bird feeder workshop for kids in the basement. On Sunday, December 13, 2009 starting at 2pm, the Grafton Garden Club and Willard House members will hold a members-only Christmas Victorian Tea. On Tuesday, February 9, 2010, starting at 7pm, Margaret Anderson of Perrault Nurseries will present a program on Nativars (cultivating native plants in your garden). On Tuesday, March 9, 2010, Kristin Orr from Fort Hill Farms will talk about Xeriscape (Drought-Tolerant) Gardens. On Tuesday, April 13, 2010, come and get a head start on planning you vegetable garden. Join the Grafton Garden Club for a panel discussion and get answers to your questions and leave with the desire to try your hand at a vegetable garden in the Spring. On Saturday, April 24, 2010, from 9am to 2pm, Grafton Garden Club and the Grafton Land Trust present the 5th annual Grafton Community Day. Help clean up Grafton! This is a great way to come together for the food of our community. On Saturday, May 15, 2010, the Grafton Garden Club presents the Annual Plant Sale and Raffle. This is the major fundraiser for the Scholarship and Grant fund for the money given to students and teachers and a wonderful opportunity to purchase plants to try out the new skills learned in the programs and workshops throughout the year. And on Saturday, June 12, 2010, the year ends with the Annual Meeting and member's Potluck Supper. This is for Grafton Garden Club members only and includes a tour of the exquisite gardens of a long-time Club member, a presentation of the past year's events, and a look towards the 80th year for the Grafton Garden Club that starts on July 1, 2010.
