Grafton Community Day Thank You!Grafton Community Day on Saturday, April 26, 2008 saw beautiful weather, and a lot of Grafton businesses and residents came out to make Grafton a lot nicer by finding, picking up, and bagging lots of trash. The day started with the Third Annual Boy Scout Troop 107 Pancake Breakfast fundraiser at the Baptist Church on the Common. Bag and glove distribution went well, and a lot of residents picked up bags either at the Municipal Center the week before or on the Common the morning of the cleanup. Over 150 people pre-registered their teams, which ranged from teams of 1 to a team of 35 for the Cub Scout troop! All the teams were assigned designated public areas for the cleanup, and all range of trash was found. Besides cigarette butts, tires, and fast food containers, the strangest discard that was reported would be a tossup between the huge container of used oil and the sponsorship sign for the Grafton Road Race (with nails still attached). The sign was definitely not this year's sign, and probably not even last year's, from the condition the sign was in and the rust on the nails. Some residents came and reported the worst areas they found, for use next year when the cleanup crews ask where they need to cleanup. The Grafton Community Day Committee wants to make sure thanks are given to the cleanup crews and sponsors. The first thanks belong to all the cleanup crews! Without you, all that trash you collected would still be on the streets of Grafton. Your help is appreciated very much. You did a good thing for this town. The Committee wants to thank the sponsors who made the barbecue that was catered by The Buggy Whip this year possible: Wyman Gordon, The Buggy Whip, Millbury National Bank, Gaudette Insurance Agency, Grafton Suburban Credit Union, Savers Bank, HomeQuest Mortgage, A.M. Appliance in Westborough, Super Stop & Shop, and the people on the Common who dropped some money into the donation can. On the Common, Pansies for Progress was selling pansies for pancreatic cancer research. The Grafton Historical Society had balloons for the kid. The Community Harvest Project was there to talk about the role volunteers have on the farm. The Grafton Educational Alliance had an information table there, too. The Grafton Garden Club handed out red maple tree seedlings provided by the Town of Grafton this year, as part of the Arbor Day celebration and to help the Town remain a Tree City again this year. The YMCA had a free family pass for a week of Y activities for the participants. Thank you for your help and support of this effort. The Grafton Garden Club is a non-profit organization that has members from many area towns. The Club provides scholarships and grants to area schools for the educational pursuit of horticulture. |
